Vendemmia 2013 in Sicilia (Harvest in Sicily)

Quest’anno si preannuncia un’ottima annata, per qualità e quantità, per i vini siciliani! In linea con le previsioni nazionali (l’Italia è il secondo produttore mondiale di vino dopo la Francia), la produzione è in crescita anche sull’Isola.

La Sicilia, terra del sole, inaugura ed anticipa già ad agosto la stagione della vendemmia, che si protrae, a causa delle condizioni altimetriche e climatiche di zone come l’Etna, fino a tutto settembre.

Nerello Mascalese – Azienda Agricola Antonio Di Mauro

Si comincia con le varietà bianche precoci Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc e soprattutto Chardonnay. Si continua poi con le varietà autoctone Insolia e Grillo. Si prosegue con i vitigni rossi: Merlot, Syrah, Nero d’Avola, Frappato e Cabernet Sauvignon. La vendemmia si conclude sull’Etna, dove le uve arrivano più tardi a maturazione. Qui si vendemmiano i rossi Nerello Mascalese e Cappuccio, ed i bianchi Carricante e Catarratto.

I dati raccolti fino a fine agosto parlano di una produzione di ottima qualità, aumentata del 10% rispetto al 2012 (si stimano circa 42-45 milioni di ettolitri), grazie al clima favorevole registrato tutto l’anno, con pioggie abbondanti nel periodo invernale e temperature favorevoli durante la fase primaverile ed estiva.

Solo i territori dell’Etna hanno visto un settembre un po’ piovoso, a cui i vignaioli hanno posto rimedio con varie tecniche, fra cui la cd. “spampinatura” (eliminazione delle foglie) al fine di favorire la ventilazione e l’esposizione al sole dei grappoli.

This year promises to be an excellent year, in quality and quantity, for Sicilian wines! In line with the national projections (Italy is the second largest producer of wine, after France), the production is growing also on the Island.

Vigna sull’Etna

Sicily, the land of the sun, open and anticipates the harvest season in August, which lasts, due to altitude and climatic zones such as Mount Etna, until the end of September. The harvest begins with the early white varieties Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Then it continues with the native varieties Insolia and Grillo, and after with the red grape varieties: Merlot, Syrah, Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon and Frappato. The harvest ends on Etna, where the grapes arrive later at maturity. Here are harvested the reds Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio and whites Carricante and Cataratto.

The data collected up to the end of August talk about a production of excellent quality, increased by 10% compared to 2012 (approximately about 42-45 millions hectolitres), thanks to the favorable climate recorded throughout the year, with heavy rains during the winter and favorable temperatures during the spring and summer. Only the Etna territories saw a September a bit rainy, to which the tenants have remedied with various techniques, including the so called “spampinatura” (elimination of the leaves) in order to allow ventilation and exposure to the sun of the bunches.
